Join a panel discussion with three experts from the world of design who have all taken alternative routes in their careers in Design: Max Fraser, Editorial Director, Dezeen is joined by Malaika Carr, Jewellery maker and architect and Founder of Chalk, and Louisa Pacifico, Founder of Future Icons. Each came from design training and ended up in different roles, albeit around the design industry. The speakers will tell their stories and offer insights into the exciting and flexible career opportunities in the industry and will open up to audience questions.

Max Fraser is the editorial director of Dezeen, joining the team in March 2023. During the previous two decades, Max has worked as a design commentator across digital media, books, magazines, exhibitions, video, and events to broaden the conversation around contemporary design and architecture.

He is the author of multiple design books including Design UK and Designers On Design, which he co-wrote with Sir Terence Conran. More recent titles include the London Design Guide series and monograph titles about designers Piet Hein Eek, Luca Nichetto and Benjamin Hubert.

As a journalist, Max has worked as a design correspondent for CNN Style and written for publications including Financial Times, Wallpaper, Icon, Surface, London’s Evening Standard, and Newsweek International.

He has worked as a content consultant for companies and organisations across the world, and worked as the deputy director the London Design Festival from 2012-2015.

Malaika Carr is the founder and creative director of Chalk Jewellery. She has run her design studio on the side of being an architect for over 10 years and loves the variety of work this brings. CHALK essentially encompasses the union between Malaika’s architectural discipline and her love for jewellery. 

Malaika has a passion for beautifully crafted design in all its forms, from the structure of large cityscapes to the intricacies of fine jewellery pieces.

Chalk’s collections are influenced by architectural elements, everyday objects and bold colourful cultural patterns. Chalk’s mission is to create stunning, sophisticated and timeless jewellery which combines elegant styles with high quality design to make you stand out and feel fabulous.

As an architect Malaika has worked for an array of award winning practices including, Michaelis Bpyd, Platform Architects and Zaha Hadid. She now consults on a both architectural and interior projects.

Louisa Pacifico, curator of ND Selects 2023, founded Future Icons in 2017, previously having been the Chief Executive of Craft Central and leading sales teams for both New Designers and Clerkenwell Design Week.

As founder of Future Icons, Louisa selects makers and designers to represent and nurture through business consultancy and curated showcases. Most notably, she developed and managed the curated showcases for The Future of Craft at London Craft Week, gallery venues within the iconic Burlington Arcade in Mayfair and was appointed VIP room curator for prestigious London Art Fair.

In addition to Future Icons, Louisa freelances as a consultant for venues across London, lectures at universities and colleges and has been appointed as an interior designer for private and corporate clients.
