THURSDAY 30 JUNE

12:00 -16:00

Design Nation - Getting Started: turning your ideas into a Business

What is your next step after finishing your studies and exhibiting at New Designers?  Have you thought about starting your own business?  Are you considering it or have you already decided that you want to start up? Or do you feel there is no other option open to you because there are no jobs in your discipline?

If any of these question relate to you, then this seminar has a lot to offer because it gives an overview of the main topics that you will need to think about if you decide to set up your own business and it goes into greater detail on management essentials – finances and legal structures.

Attendees had the opportunity to have their questions answered by our experts and took away a free copy of Design-Nation’s Business Start-Up Guide for Designers and Makers (usually priced £5), which is the basis for this seminar.

Design-Nation, in partnership with Briffa, The Bishopsland Trust and Akker &Co presents  three seminars for graduates wondering what to do next.  ‘Setting up in business’ covers some legal and financial essentials; ‘Support for Silversmiths & Jewellers’ is about The Bishopsland Trust’s residential post-graduate course, and ‘Making the most of New Designers’ aims to get you to start networking right here at the show.

Facing the challenges ahead with New Designers

We are aware of the many challenges and changes universities are now being faced with following government cuts. Therefore, it is even more important for universities to use New Designers to showcase the excellent standard of teaching, celebrate and support its graduates, communicate changes and ensure future growth through recruitment.

For many universities the shift in funding New Designers may rest more on the graduates so this is an opportunity for them to learn why exhibiting at New Designers is so valuable, ask questions, share ideas, meet fellow student reps, share experiences and if applicable, ideas for how to fundraise to enable them to achieve these opportunities.
