13th Appledore Visual Arts Festival University College Falmouth Exhibition ‘Out of Hand’
‘Out of Hand’ is an exciting new exhibition of original high quality work from some of University College Falmouth’s best alumni, postgraduates and undergraduates. Their creative and often highly innovative art will showcase the significant role played by Falmouth’s internationally renowned Contemporary Craft, 3D Design and Textile Design courses.
The exhibition will give Festival visitors, the opportunity to see how talented and highly skilled students have explored traditional methods and combined these with cutting edge technology to create original new work. Course Leader for UCF’s MAs in Design, Andrew Harbert, comments; “The Festival presents an ideal opportunity for our students and graduates to show off their excellence and creativity, and to explore a wide range of topics and materials through their personal creative language”.
Appledore Arts, the Festival organisers, are proud to be working with University College of Falmouth. Sandy Brown, Artistic Director, said; “We are excited to have an exhibition of this quality and calibre as the lead exhibition at our 13th Appledore Visual Arts Festival. Why not give yourself a treat, come along and buy a unique piece of contemporary art from a talented emerging designer. If you haven’t bought an original piece before, make 2010 the year you start your collection. It will be one of the most exciting things you’ve done, and the pleasure will be with you every day !”
Amongst the artists and designers exhibiting are several alumni who have gone on to work as successful artists and crafts people. Laura Carnell inlays intricate pewter designs into solid timber, creating beautifully tactile furniture pieces all invested with personal meaning. A BA(Hons) Contemporary Crafts graduate, she has won successive prizes at the Pewter Live competition which has led to an invitation to become a member of the Association of British Pewter Craftsmen. Some of her past projects have included maps of London and Milan, contours of both figures and landscape, and text-based images inlayed as surface decoration into her range of furniture. Laura’s company, Rara Design, is currently working on several commissions including two sculptural pieces for a memorial garden dedicated to George Harrison and a submission for Pewter Live 2010.
Remon Jephcott, a fellow BA(Hons) Contemporary Crafts graduate, combines mixed media including silver and glass in her ceramics to give quality and expression to her work. Following graduation, Remon went straight on to participate in the prestigious New Designers Exhibition in London. As a result of this, she was invited to exhibit in Rutland and two further galleries in London, including the Society of Designer Craftsmen Winter exhibition at the prestigious Mall Galleries. At this event she was awarded the TSB Award for Excellence. Remon has shown in further exhibitions in Cornwall and is now continuing her studies with an MA in 20th Century Art & Design at Falmouth.
Charlotte Tangye is a current MA 3D Design student, using digital technologies to explore representations of place in product design. A winner in the 2006 Student Lighting Design Awards, Charlotte’s past work has been used to launch the eBay Express website and she designed an exclusive range of wire storage products for Heal’s Discovers 2008.
Continuing successes such as these demonstrate how the design and craft courses at University College Falmouth are leading the way in their specialist areas and encouraging students to be experimental, to explore new ways of using traditional methods and to find their own unique voice whilst preparing them for professional life. Sally Wills-Heath of UCF’s Alumni Relations team adds: “We are delighted that our former students remain so enthusiastic about the activities of the institution that we can enjoy their continued participation and success in events such as Appledore.” The exhibition will be open from 11am – 6pm from Thursday June 3rd to Sunday June 6th and will be the lead event on the Opening Night (Wednesday June 2nd) where visitors will have the opportunity to view the premiere of three major exhibitions.

3.University College Falmouth is the only independent Higher Education institution in Cornwall with the powers to award degrees in its own name. It has two campuses in Cornwall – at Woodlane in Falmouth and Tremough in Penryn (which it owns, and jointly manages with the University of Exeter) - and a third campus at Totnes in Devon, following its merger with Dartington College of Arts in 2008. This merger created a new institution focusing on the expansion of Falmouth’s expertise in Art, Design and Media and Dartington’s expertise in Choreography, Music, Theatre, Art and Writing. The Devon-based courses will relocate to a new, high-specification Performance Centre at Tremough in 2010, paving the way for a new specialist Arts University in Cornwall by 2013/2014 that will be unique to the South West. The University College is a founding partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), a unique initiative to promote regional economic regeneration through Higher Education, funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One and Convergence), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall Council.
