NEW DESIGNERS SUCCESS STORIES - ONE YEAR ON, PART 1

HAT’S OFF TO EMMA YEO – FIRST PAST THE POST AT ROYAL ASCOT

Emma Yeo  - a headwear and accessories designer -  was the winner of the UK’s top millinery accolade, namely the Queen’s Hat Award in the competition, aptly entitled ‘who wants to be a Millin-aire’ at National Hat Day at Royal Ascot on 16 June.  Emma wins £1000 and the ‘Swift’ hat (based on the bird) sold last week at John Lewis (Oxford Street). The stunning headwear is made from Japanese Spruce wood veneer and is laser cut, taking about 3 days to design and assemble.

The Swift hat is from Emma’s current collection, ‘Predator and Prey’ based on three bird groups – the Swift, Swan and Raven – and the different headpieces capture the intrinsic spirit of the birds. More examples from the collection will be on show at the New Designers exhibition at the Business Design Centre, Islington during Part 1 from 1-4 July where she is part of One Year On – a selected showcase of promising designers who have set up in business in the last 12 months.

Head Judge Louis Mariette of ‘Who wants to be a mili-naire’, organised by Royal Ascot inspired website Queens-Hat.com said, “ ‘Who wants to be a milli-naire’ has attracted milliners from all over the world and received over 1000 entries from as far afield as china, America and Australia with the top six being displayed on the biggest stage of all at the royal meeting.”

CLAIRE MCINALLY’S OASIS SUMMER COLLECTION FEATURES
Another success story at New Designers 2010 is Claire McInally – whose textile collection was spotted at New Designers in 2009 by the Oasis design team.  This summer, Claire’s geometric patterns appear in Oasis new summer collection of dresses and footwear which is currently the main window display.  Claire McInally will be showing a new portfolio of textiles at the One Year On showcase at New Designers Part 1.

New Designers is at the Business Design Centre in 2 parts from 1-4 and 7-11 July showcasing the very best in graduate design from fashion to furniture, architecture to animation, graphics to glass. It unveils the talents of 2010’s design graduates as they emerge from the UK’s design courses to embark upon their careers and is enjoyed as much by the design hungry public as talent spotting retailers, buyers, gallery curators, manufacturers and prospective employers.  The One Year On showcase presents 40 recent design entrepreneurs.  www.newdesigners.com
