Students repackaging M&S
Over the last few months, product and interaction students have been hard at work on their ideas for a collaboration project with department store giant Marks & Spencer and eco-design consultancy Giraffe Innovations.
The project brief asked students to look at three areas across the food department, with the aim of improving sustainability and innovation. After several rounds of presentations, the winner was finally chosen at M&S London headquarters. BA (Hons) Product Design (now known as BA (Hons) Design (Products)) student Jamie Grater was chosen as the winner with his environmentally-friendly packaging design for salads. Jamie will undertake paid placements at M&S and Giraffe, gaining valuable industry experience.
Mark Caul, Packaging Technologist for M&S, said, “The students came across in a clear and concise manner, and we were impressed with the standard of work as well as the presentations. The students should all be proud of themselves – and certainly were of equal standard to people who have been in the industry for many years. The final decision was tough, but Jamie had the complete package. Well presented, well argued, not afraid to challenge our thinking, great packaging design, considered views on the sustainable agenda. We think he will fit in well with our teams and we are delighted to have him on board for the placement.”
This project with M&S is a new relationship for Ravensbourne; discussions are underway for another project for autumn 2010 with the M&S Household team.
