3 QUESTIONS WITH THE AARDMAN ACADEMY

Are you an emerging illustrator, animator or graphic designer looking for guidance from leading brands in the design industry?

We have on hand the brilliant Mark Simon Hewis, Head of the Aardman Academy, to provide career changing advice. Discover how this professional sources inspiration, remains positive and the one piece of advice he would give himself when he was in your shoes.

Looking back to the start of your career, what advice would you love to give yourself?

Know what you want to create and don’t expect anyone to ever ask you to ask you to be creative. That needs to come sole from yourself. Creativity is subjective and so don’t try to please everyone.

What does resilience mean to you?

Resilience is pushing through the days you don’t think you’re very good. Everyone has that. Anyone who says they love everything they’ve ever made is lying and they’ve just realised that if they say that it helps THEM be more resilient. It’s about focussing on what you’re trying to achieve and quite often being brave enough to not take the easy path.

Who or what inspires you?

I’m inspired by anyone trying to develop, improve and grow as an artist. Someone who never seems to shy away from creative risk-taking. I find it inspiring when I see creatives getting absolute joy from playing.
