The winner of the Romo award is Lois Davis. We were impressed by Lois’s sense of colour and layering of textures. Her strong design concept was followed through into a textile collection that was well-rounded and presented beautifully
OVERVIEW
To create an exciting and innovative series of textile, wallcovering or surface pattern designs based around the theme ‘Reflection’. This is a loose theme that should act as a starting point for ideas and can be interpreted in many different ways. Consider what the word ‘Reflection’ means to you. Take a moment to reflect on your journey so far or the world around you. Does this influence your outlook for the future? Does reflection inspire change?
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Lois Davies’ work focuses on the feeling of Hiraeth, a Welsh word that has no equivalent translation in English, but is a feeling of deep homesickness, a longing, a nostalgia for a place or time that might not still be. Being isolated and stuck in our homes, we have all had time to reflect and feel hiraeth for a place or that feeling of normality. Therefore, Lois decided to create a collection of textile designs that reflect where she feels hiraeth for and others also, which is Cei Newydd, a small seaside town in Wales.
