As seen at Milan Design Week, visitors to this year’s curated One Year On section will find a heavy emphasis upon sustainability in the work of emerging designers.

Exhibitors across both Parts 1 and 2 have responded to issues like climate change and rubbish disposal, incorporating these contemporary problems into their pieces to prompt discussion and awareness.

Sustainable consumption is a major source of inspiration for jewellery designer Sinead Cooke, who re-purposes waste materials like milk bottles and combines them with silver to create earrings, bracelets and necklaces. Her work challenges our perceptions of precious materials, encouraging us to see the design possibilities of recycling post-consumer waste plastic.

Similarly both designers Katy Gillam-Hull and Carmen Machado collect discarded objects from beaches, with Carmen weaving the fishing equipment she finds into her textiles to prompt us to think about sustainable fishing and the environmental impact we are having on the sea. Katy collects broken or abandoned objects from shorelines and turns them into art.

Meanwhile Sallysally’s products encourage the buyer to practice their own skills by partially assembling her flat pack style accessories and clothing. Inspired by the simplicity of Scandinavian design, Sally believes that engaging the buyer in the making process promotes an attitude of sustainability, resulting in enduring, stylish products while drawing attention to our consumption habits.

Finally, Scottish based furniture company HAME have stressed the sustainable approach adopted in their Lambda Range. All of their products in the range were cut from one sheet of birch ply, ensuring that they didn’t produce any waste and used all of the base material.

The growing theme of sustainability in design lends itself to a variety of interpretations across multiple disciplines, and inspires some beautiful, interesting results.

Book your tickets to come and see these and many more exhibitors at the Business Design Centre. Part 1 runs from 28 June – 01 July 2017, and Part 2 is 05 – 08 July 2017.
