Home products made from waste fats, to purses fashioned out of shedded snake skins. Our 2019 show saw new designers working towards the future to tackle global concerns by exploring bizarrely brilliant new materials.

‘Sapu’

An intuitive kitchen product that transforms household fat, oil and grease (FOG) waste into soap.

Sustainability is obviously very important to you and your focus. What is it about sustainability that resonates with you as a designer?

Sustainability is all about being able to meet the needs of the present without compromising those of the future. A principle which provides designers, like myself, with a challenging yet exciting opportunity to innovate, think outside the box and to help improve social, economic and environmental development.

What is your goal as a designer?

To enjoy my work and to leave a positive impact (no matter how big or small) on the planet by helping other individuals, communities and environments.

Who or what is your biggest influence/inspiration?

It’s a hard one to pin down who my biggest influence would be but as a collective, I would have to say its pioneers for change like Ellen MacArthur who are illustrating how we can re-think and re-design the future to actually succeed in formulating a successful one for all.

How do you push through a creative block?

If I can I try to remove myself from the scenario for 5, have a cup of earl grey tea, a biscuit or 2 or 3… and relax while listening to a little bit of music. This normally helps to clear and refresh my mind before I attempt to logically re-work the issue at hand. If I still don’t have any luck my next go-tos are to try and talk the scenario through with my peers, colleagues etc or to go out and investigate the target area further.

What’s next for you, where will you focus your next project?

I am going to be re-entering the working world as a designer at DCA in the next few weeks, however, until then I am still working on/adapting/improving my Sápu project and have been trailing out some new recipes and visuals with an array of users.

Hypothetically, if your studio was a blaze and you could save one thing, what would it be?

An A5 notebook that I have jotted and doodled random design ideas, thoughts, solutions, observations and conversations in over the years. It has definitely seen better days, with sellotape keeping a few pages in tacked, but it is a great little inspiration and memory piece.
