Inspiring Inclusion: Women Shaping the Design Landscape

Cultivating Creative Spaces with Olivia English

This year’s edition of International Women’s Day honours the theme of ‘Inspire Inclusion’.

We’ve spoken to a number of inspirational members of the #NDCommunity who have shared their experiences of being a woman in the design industry, and what inspires them to forge a more inclusive future. In this series of interviews, meet the individuals who are breaking down barriers and driving inclusion in their practices to shape the future of design with creativity and resilience.

Working in recycled Silver and Gold, Olivia is a contemporary jeweller based in Penryn, Cornwall. Join us at New Designers 2024 to meet Olivia and experience her magnificent designs which she will be exhibiting as part of ND Selects in Week 1.

This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is ‘Inspire Inclusion’, what does this mean to you?

‘They are both such great words! I think by ‘inspiring inclusivity’ we create a space within the design world for all of us to share and enjoy our creativity, innovation and ideas. An inclusive environment allows people to thrive – to not feel judged but instead be heard – to become inspired!’

Is there a particular woman in the design world that inspires you?

‘Zaha Hadid – the Architect; her designs and achievements are incredible. And I think Iris Apfel’s bold and unapologetic individuality is pretty inspiring!’

What piece of advice would you give to women pursuing a career in the design world?

‘When you find your process – go with it and enjoy it (even if you discover your process is a messy one!) Try to enjoy the discovery within your design explorations – there is nothing quite like a vision coming to life; and probably – to trust your instincts.’

Is there a particular woman designer or women-run design business you’d like to give a shout out to?

‘I don’t think I have one in particular – I just think that all women should be supporting all women to do great things – whatever they may be!’

Join us at New Designers 2024 to have a chat with Olivia and view these intricate designs for yourself – find her in ND Selects in Week 1 (26 – 29 June). Learn more below.
