Course name : BA (Hons) Printed Textiles & Surface Pattern Design
Our Textile Design course has an exceptional reputation for producing commercially engaged creative designers. We will will encourage you to establish an individual design identity, becoming confident and accomplished in developing print focused outcomes for applications across textile and surface situations as diverse as fabric for fashion, interior products, gifting and architectural settings.
Supported by a team of specialists in image making, research and surface design, the course offers an exciting mix of practical workshops and design thinking, enabling you to explore and question your ideas through drawing, colour, design investigation and surface and material experimentation in its broadest sense.
The course will help develop your understanding of the global textile and surface industries, building your confidence and experience of working with industry through a combination of exciting live briefs, competitions and employment related activities via our extensive professional network. You will learn to design for different markets and audiences across a range of surfaces and be supported in your career aspirations by gaining skills which will see you fully prepared for direct employment by high street and designer brands, further study or self-employment.
As experienced educators, researchers and practitioners, your tutor team will introduce you to a breadth of contemporary approaches. Traditional techniques, including screen print and print making are taught alongside contemporary digital design practices, surface embellishment and manipulation processes.
Your practical engagement will be underpinned by an understanding of the context of your practice developing an awareness of contemporary global issues and ethical concerns such as sustainability, collaborative practices and innovation across surface and textiles. You will work within Textile Design studio, an inspirational and stimulating environment for teaching, design-related workshops, peer-to-peer learning and student collaboration where you will be encouraged to experiment, innovate and build industry-relevant skills and experiences.
Our studio is the centre of our course community creative practice where students draw, paint, design and share and test out ideas – a hub of activity and inspiration!
