We caught up with Verity Howard, a Ceramicist & Maker who exhibited as a part of One Year In 2018.

Tell us about your OYI Experience

Exhibiting at One Year In was a brilliant opportunity and proved to be a great platform for my work. As a result of taking part in OYI my work was featured in the London Evening Standard, Homes and Property section. I also had the opportunity to invite galleries to meet me at OYI and to see my new body of work. Subsequently I will be exhibiting at the Bluecoat Display Centre in April, 2019, in their New Makers Exhibition. Taking part in OYI was also a great chance to meet other like-minded makers. I was thoroughly impressed by the high standard of everyone’s work and the level of professionalism throughout the show.

What are your hope and aspirations for the future?

I will continue making ambitious work and push my practice in new and exciting directions. In the near future I plan to apply for funding in order to work on a yearlong collaborative project with a fine artist working in sound. Furthermore, I currently work at Herefordshire Headway teaching adults who have a head injury or an acquired brain injury ceramics once a week. I hope to continue to develop my work in an Arts for Health setting as this is something I feel passionately about and I feel makes a real difference.
Moreover, I will continue to build my profile both nationally and internationally. I would love one day to have my work represented by a gallery such as Cynthia Corbett Gallery or Joanna Bird, which has an international presence. Moreover I aspire to exhibit at Collect at the Saatchi Gallery. I always enjoy visiting this prestigious show and seeing the incredible standard of work exhibited there. In the future I would also like to be represented by an international gallery such as Officine Saffi, Milan and Puls Contemporary Ceramics, Brussels in order to further promote my work across Europe.

Why should emerging designers apply for One Year In?

I would recommend applying for OYI as this is a great opportunity to showcase your work. You will have the chance to talk to galleries and network with people in the creative industry. Furthermore I really valued the support from Patricia at the Design Trust and Rheanna Lingham, OYI curator, in the webinars before the show. These webinars helped us to think about key things such as who we would like to invite to the show and what would make the show a success for us, this support insured that I felt prepared for OYI. Furthermore OYI provides stand furniture such as tables and shelves which means although you have to design your display you don’t have to transport furniture through London, which would definitely add to the stress of exhibiting. I really valued this experience in designing a stand and taking part in an exhibition in London as I have now been selected for Ceramic Art London, 2019. I will have to design a stand for Ceramic Art London and also bring my own furniture to the venue. After taking part in OYI I feel confident that I will be able to plan a display that both looks good and is practical. I would definitely recommend One Year In to anyone who is thinking of applying, it is a great opportunity not to be missed!
