3 QUESTIONS WITH KAREN HALLER, COLOUR IN DESIGN AWARD JUDGE

Meet Karen Haller, Applied Colour & Design Psychology practitioner and judge at this year’s New Designers for the Colour In Design Award.

What does a typical day look like for you?

There is nothing typical about my day which is great as I love variety and spontaneity. I guess the only thing that is consistent is that I get to work with colour all day, every day. I could be working on client projects which range from working with designers and architects through to colour campaigns for global brands anywhere in the world – I get to travel which I love. I could be on a podcast interview, TV or print media interview on colour related stories which are usually based on my book, The Little Book of Colour, or invited to be a keynote speaker or panellist for industry events. I’m a judge for several industry awards each year as well. And then there’s helping my students who sign up for my colour & design psychology mentoring programmes.

What has your experience taught you about a career in design?

That I am grateful that I have the joy, the freedom to be able to do what I love every single day and that’s work with colour. It taught me to trust my instinct, even when others doubted me. It taught me to surround myself with a close group of people who believe in me more than I do myself – this was especially helpful in the early days. There’s a lot of admin, accounts, the not so fun side of running your own business. Outsource this as soon as you can!

What piece of advice would you give to an up-and-coming designer?

Tap into your own unique creativity. Do something that you love and believe in, something that you’re passionate about, because when you have those days of self-doubt, it’s that passion that will keep you going.
