3 QUESTIONS WITH MARIANNE SHILLINGFORD, COLOUR IN DESIGN AWARD JUDGE

Meet Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director of Dulux and founder of the Colour in Design Awards. Learn about her creative inspiration and process below.

Can you tell us about one of your favourite projects and how the process evolved?

One of my favourite to date is a recent project that matched the stories and feelings of 12 classic books to 12 classic colours. It was designed to make us think differently about colour and how we use it to enhance the experience we have in lived-in spaces. I worked with an amazing creative team and enjoyed every element of the process from researching the colours and pairing them with the perfect titles to working with a photographer who specialised in liquids. Best of all though was that I got to create the book covers and bring each subject to life in paint. A complete dream job

What piece of advice would you give to an up-and-coming designer?

Don’t panic too much about the future, especially if it’s not clear to you what you want to do or how you are going make a success of yourself (I’ve never actually met anyone creative who had any idea at the beginning). Be open to unexpected paths and experiences, be pragmatic when you must be and don’t beat yourself up if you end up working in a bar or chip shop for a few years while you get together. Every day, resolve to take a step – even a little one – towards the place you want to be. Shuffling towards success is perfectly fine, just keep shuffling. Hard work is a given and so are setbacks and disappointments, but we learn most in the cringeworthy uncomfortable bits of our lives and this business is nothing but exciting, challenging and ultimately fulfilling if you give it your best shot.

Tell us about your role in your company and your career trajectory.

I am the Creative Director of Dulux and my career trajectory has been fueled by my passion and expertise in colour and paintFrom painting fairground rides and narrow boats in my youth to running my own design and decorating business for many years, the focus has always been to learn more, do more, push boundaries, share knowledge and be inspired by others.
