3 QUESTIONS WITH MILES KILBURN, DCA

We sat down with Miles Kilburn, Associate Industrial Designer at DCA, whose talent and creativity shone brightly as an exhibitor at New Designers 2019. Learn more about Miles below.

What was your experience like at New Designers?

New Designers was a whirlwind. It was great to have my work featured alongside that of so many other talented young designers. I had the chance to meet and mingle with so many industry professionals – to pick their brains and get feedback on my own projects. I met the DCA team at this event and a few weeks later they offered me a job. It’s safe to say New Designers changed the trajectory of my career.

Can you tell us about one of your favourite projects and how the process developed?

I had the privilege to take on the role as lead designer on a project where we developed a telemedicine booth aiming to support communities in rural Indonesia, where millions of people delay treatment because medical care is too far away. This project underscored the power of collaborative innovation, drawing on our team’s diverse expertise in engineering, design, human factors, and rapid prototyping to develop a pilot product in just a few months. Equally crucial were the insights from local health experts, who guided our design to ensure the system worked seamlessly for doctors, nurses, and patients.

It was immensely rewarding to see the design through from the first sketch to a real product having real impact in the world.

What piece of advice would you give to an up-and-coming designer?

Early in your career it’s easy to get caught up in design work, spending countless hours in front of a computer. It’s just as important to step away from work, get outdoors, explore new hobbies, and expose yourself to new perspectives, from there the good ideas will follow.
